Designed in 1929 by Charles Hollingshead, the Regent Theatre in Palmerston North opened on 4 July 1930 and was hailed as “The Wonder Theatre.” Over time, it fell into disrepair and closed in 1991. In response to public outcry, the Palmerston North City Council purchased and restored the theatre, contributing $10 million, alongside $1 million from the Lotteries Grants Board and $1.7 million raised by the community. Restoration began in 1996 and was completed to a high standard, with the theatre reopening in May 1998 as a premier performance venue.
